Origin and History

It is believed that the Ruby mines of Mogok, Burma is the place where these stones were first mined. As it is older than history, the exact date is still unknown. The name of this stone was originated from the Latin word "ruber", which means red. 

In the first century (AD 1 to AD 100), Pliny the Elder, a Roman author described the hardness and density of Ruby in his book called "Natural History". These stones were known as "Ratnataj" in ancient India which means "king of precious stones".

Formation Process

Rubies are made up of the mineral corundum (an extremely hard mineral) or aluminum oxide. Just like other gemstones, it is formed deep within the Earth's crust under the condition of extreme heat and pressure. The pure corundum is colorless but when the aluminum atoms are replaced by other substances, the stone can get its color. This process helps to form Rubies and get its deep red color.

Formula

The chemical formula of Ruby is Al2 O3 (Aluminium Oxide). It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale and an adamantine to vitreous luster.
