Origin and History

In ancient times, peoples might have found Pearls on the shores but there is no actual trace about who discovered these stones. In the 5th century BC, ancient Romans and Egyptians used these stones as adornments. A Roman emperor, Caligula (37-41 AD) his favorite horse Incitatus a consul and adorned its neck with a Pearl necklace.

Formation Process

A natural pearl is formed in an oyster's shell when a grain of sand falls in one of the two shells of oyster. It will irritate and damage the fragile body of the oyster. To protect itself from irritation or damage, it begins to cover the grain of sand with layers of nacre or mother of pearl. It produces more and more layers until Pearl is formed.


The chemical formula of Pearl is CaCO3 (calcium carbonate). These stones have a hardness of 2.5-4.5 on the Mohs hardness scale and has pearly luster.

A strand of freshwater Pearl can range from $50-$2000. 

A Filipino fisherman discovered the most expensive Pearl in the world in the seas of Palawan Island. It measured approximately 26 inches and was valued at $100 million.
