Garnets are a group of silicate minerals and are the birthstone of January. All the Garnets are not red but in fact, they are available in almost all colors - blue, red, pink, green, black, and even colorless. 

Among all the colors, blue is very rare and dark red is the most common. It is rated 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness and it has a vitreous luster.

The antique pyrope hair comb is from the Victorian era which was donated by Ales & Maria Herdlicka to the Smithsonian in 1937. This hair comb is covered with Bohemia pyropes and all the pyropes are rose cut which was famous during the 19th century. Pyrope is derived from the Greek word "pyropos" which means "fiery".

King Louis XIV owned an eagle brooch in which the large stone is Garnet, and the rest were Rubies, Pearl, and Enamel. There has been gossip that it was possibly gained from a French noblewoman Marie-Louise de Gonzague who had married two kings of Poland. The eagle is holding the scepter and orb in both of its legs.

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom received a Garnet and Gold parure which includes a necklace, a bracelet, a brooch and a pair of earrings. It was given as a gift from the Municipality of Brno during her State visit to the Czech Republic. On 1st January 2006, she wore it for divine service at Sandringham but she has never been seen wearing it publicly.

In the 1930's the Rosenborg kokoshnik tiara was made by Danish court jeweler Dragsted on the order of Prince Viggo who was the Count of Rosenborg. Since Prince and Princess Viggo had no children of their own, Princess Margaretha who was the sister-in-law of Viggo inherited it. After that, the tiara was used by Countess Ruth of Rosenborg (1924-2010).
