In 1845, An Austrian Mineralogist, Wilhelm Karl Ritter von Haidinger named "Cerussite" from the Latin word "Cerussa" which means "White Lead". It was first described by K. Gesner, a Swiss naturalist, as one of the primary types of lead ore.

Formation Process

Cerussite commonly occurs as a secondary mineral from oxidized lead deposits. These minerals are formed as a result of the chemical action of the carbonated water on the mineral Galena. It can be found in association with other minerals like - Barite, Calcite, Anglesite, Galena, Silver, Limonite, and Malachite.

The chemical formula of Cerussite is PbCO3. These stones have a hardness of 3-3.5 according to the Mohs scale.
