Breitahuptite was first believed to be described in 1840 from the Harz Mountains, Lower Saxony, Germany. Then, the name was given by Julius Fröbel, a German geologist and mineralogist, in the honor of Johann Friedrich August Breithaupt, a German mineralogist, and professor.

Formation Process

Breithauptite is a metallic opaque copper-red mineral that typically occurs in hydrothermal calcite veins associated with Co-Ni–Ag ores. It can be found in association with other minerals like - calcite, nickeline, and silver.


The chemical formula of Breithauptite is NiSb (Nickel Antimonide). It has a hardness of 5.5 according to the Mohs scale.


Arite is the only variety of Breithauptite.
