Amazonite, also known as "Amazon Stone", was named after the Amazon river although there is no trace about these stones being found in or anywhere near the river. Many times, these stones have been confused with Turquoise and Jade.

Two ancient Amazonite mines were found in 2006 in Egypt which dated back to almost 1800 BC. It was also found as a form of jewelry in King Tut’s tomb. Amazonite can be found in India, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Canada, Tanzania, and Australia.

Formation Process

Amazonites are found in pegmatites, granites, igneous and metamorphic rocks, hydrothermal veins, and schists and gneisses. These stones are formed in deep-sea igneous rocks that once cooled very slowly.

Formula

The chemical formula of Amazonite is KAlSi3O8. These stones have a hardness of 6-6.5 according to the Mohs scale and they have a vitreous luster.
